South Western Dollars for Scholars – Scholarship Listing
South Western seniors and alumni may apply for any of the scholarships below. Read scholarship criteria closely to a) make sure you qualify and b) make note of any required essays or letters of rec. You must indicate on the SW DFS google form which specific scholarships you are applying for.
Dollar amounts and number of awards listed here are based on last year’s awards given. Dollar amounts listed here should be considered tentative. Exact dollar amounts will depend on confirmation from Dollars for Scholars and the York County Community Foundation.
Terrence Hormel and Monna Brown Hormel Scholarship – $10,000 ($5,000 year 1 + $5,000 year 2)
This scholarship is intended to support a SWHS senior student who demonstrates academic achievement, community service, and leadership ability. Strong preference will be given to first generation college students who will be attending either University of Pittsburgh or York College of PA. Make sure your resume reflects your leadership and community contributions.
Required Essay: Write a one-page essay addressing your future career goals.
Philip L. Hempfing Memorial Scholarship – $4,000 (+$1,000 renewal)
This scholarship is dedicated to the memory of Mr. Phil Hempfing who was a 1969 graduate of South Western High School and who served as a South Western school board member, elementary principal, and district assistant superintendent until his untimely death from cancer in 1998. The scholarship is awarded to a South Western senior who plans to attend an accredited two- or four-year college, university, trade or technical school, or other post- secondary institution. The scholarship is awarded to that student who exhibits the values and qualities of a “True Mustang” especially leadership, strong work ethic, and service to the school and community. Make sure your resume reflects these qualities.
*Philip Hempfing Scholarship winner may renew the scholarship for an additional $1,000 the following year. Renewal depends on maintaining a minimum 3.0 GPA in college. (Total value of scholarship: $5,000)
Make a Difference Scholarship – 5 scholarships: $1,000 each (+$500 renewal)
This scholarship is awarded to current SWHS seniors based on a combination of academics and achievement. Applicants must have made a significant contribution to the school and community. Make sure your resume reflects your activities, accomplishments, leadership, and contributions.
*Make a Difference Scholarship winners may renew the scholarship for an additional $500 the following year. Renewal depends on maintaining a minimum 3.0 GPA in college. (Total value of scholarship: $1,500)
Make a Difference – Alumni ONLY – 2 scholarships, $1,000 each.
This scholarship is open to all graduates of South West. Winners will be selected based on a combination of academic achievement and community involvement. Make sure your resume reflects your activities, accomplishments, leadership, and contributions.
Dale Schaeberle Upward Bound Scholarship – $1,000 (+ $1,000 renewal)
This scholarship is awarded in memory of Dr. Dale Schaeberle who was a first-generation college student and served as our school superintendent from 1974 to 1993. Dr. Schaeberle was instrumental in the formation of South Western Dollars for Scholars and served on the board from 1998 to 2016. The scholarship is awarded to a graduating SWHS senior who is a first-generation higher education bound student. *Schaeberle Scholarship winners may renew the scholarship for an additional $1000 the following year. Renewal depends on maintaining a minimum 3.0 GPA in college. (Total value of scholarship: $2,000)
Required Letter of Recommendation: Submit a recommendation from an adult who has positively influenced your decision to pursue higher education.
Christopher A. Funt Memorial Scholarship – $500
This scholarship is awarded to a SWHS athlete who plans to attend an accredited college, university, or trade/technical school as a full-time student.
Required Essay: Write a 1-2 paragraph essay summarizing your athletic involvement, future plans, and what this scholarship would mean to you.
“The Book Lady’s Educational Scholarship” – $500
This scholarship is awarded to at least one deserving SWHS senior who plans to attend an accredited college, university or technical school as a full-time student in the Fall.
Required Essay: : Education can be a difficult journey. Describe a time that you faced an educational learning challenge and what you did to be successful.
Baresville PTA Scholarship – General Scholarship-$500 Education Scholarship – $500
These two scholarships are awarded to SWHS seniors who attended Baresville Elementary School for at least three years. Applicants must be in the top one-third of his/her class, must show financial need, and must be attending a two-year or four-year college or university. One scholarship will be given to a student specifically studying Education in college.
Required Essay: Write a 1-2 paragraph essay which includes the years and grades you attended Baresville AND how your time at Baresville prepared you for your future education.
Manheim Elementary PTA Scholarship – $500
This scholarship is awarded to a graduating senior who attended Manheim Elementary School. Must be in the top one-third of his/her class and must be attending a two-year or four-year college or university.
Required Essay: Write a 1-2 paragraph essay which includes the years and grades you attended Manheim AND how your time at Manheim prepared you for your future education.
Park Hills Elementary PTA Scholarship – Gene Bowser & Ralph Noble – $500 each
These two scholarships are awarded to a graduating senior who is in the top one third of their class, who attended Park Hills Elementary School, and who is planning to attend a two or four year college or university.
Required Essay: Write a 1-2 paragraph essay which includes the years and grades you attended Park Hills AND how your time at Park Hills prepared you for your future education.
West Manheim Elementary PTO Scholarship – $500
This scholarship is awarded to a graduating senior who has attended West Manheim Elementary School. Must be in the top one-third of his/her class and be attending a two-year or four-year college or university.
Required Essay: Write a 1-2 paragraph essay which includes the years and grades you attended West Manheim AND how your time at West Manheim prepared you for your future education.
EHMMS PTO Scholarship – $1,000
This scholarship is awarded to a graduating senior who attended Emory H. Markle for all three years of Middle School (6th – 8th grade).
Required Essay: Write 1 -2 sentence to respond to each of the following questions:
Describe how you have demonstrated leadership ability both in and out of school.
What is your greatest strength/weakness?
Tell me about a personal achievement that makes you proud.
What are your career goals?
From a financial standpoint, what impact would this scholarship have on your education?
State any special personal or family circumstances affecting your need for financial assistance.
James S. Ernst Memorial Scholarship – $1,000
This scholarship is awarded to a deserving SWHS senior who plans to attend an accredited college, university or technical/trade school as a full-time student in the Fall. He/she needs to be involved in volunteer efforts/extracurricular activities in the school and/or the community. Make sure your resume reflects your activities and service contributions.
Required Essay: Write a one-page essay addressing your future career goals and what this scholarship would mean to you.
Gabriella Sicard Memorial Scholarship – $1,500
This scholarship is awarded to a SWHS Senior female athlete who plans to attend an accredited four-year college or university as a full-time student.
Required Essay: Write two-to-three paragraphs explaining the benefits of higher education and what winning this scholarship will mean to you.
SW Transportation Memorial Scholarship – $600
This scholarship is awarded to at least one SWHS senior planning to attend an accredited college, university or technical/trade school as a full-time student. Applicants must have a GPA of 2.5 or better and demonstrate civic, community, and school involvement.
Required Essay: Write a one-page essay addressing your future career plans and why you have chosen this field.
Required Letter of Recommendation: Submit a letter of recommendation from an adult advisor/mentor from one of the activities/groups you are a member of (community or school activity).
Coach Bill Sterner Scholarship – $500
This scholarship is awarded to a senior student involved in the swimming and diving program at SWHS.
Required Essay: Write a one paragraph essay regarding your involvement in the swimming/diving program.
Alleghenies United Cerebral Palsy (AUCP) Scholarship – $1,000
AUCP is sponsoring this scholarship for a current SWHS senior who will continue their studies at an accredited four or two year school in the field of human services (for example: Social work, Special Education, Occupational Therapy, etc.) OR to a student who is living with a disability. It is preferred that applicants have at least a 3.0 GPA.
Stock and Leader Educational Law Scholarship – $500
Stock and Leader is sponsoring this scholarship for a current SWHS senior planning to pursue studies in the field of law or education (preference to students planning to study law).
Timothy L. Lucabaugh Memorial Scholarship – $1,000
This scholarship is available to a current SWHS senior who is planning to attend an accredited two-year trade/technical school OR a student planning to attend a 4 year school who has lost a parent.
Required Essay: Write an essay on how you meet the above criteria, your career plans, and your reasons for attending post-secondary education through the institution of your choice.
Two-Year Trade/Technical Scholarship – 2 scholarships, $1,000 each
This scholarship is available to a SWHS senior or alumni who plans to attend a two-year or technical school as a full-time student.
Mark Defibaugh Memorial Scholarship – $1,000
This scholarship is available to SWHS seniors who have a mental handicap, physical handicap, or learning disability and who plan to continue their education after graduation.
Earl and Eileen Cooper Memorial Scholarship – $750
This scholarship is available to a SWHS senior who plans to pursue any of three career paths: nursing OR music OR automotive technology.
Required Essay: Write a two paragraph essay stating why you have selected your chosen career path.
Mason Brady Memorial Scholarship – 2 scholarships, $1,000 each
This scholarship, named in honor of South Western alumni Mason Brady, is available to current SW seniors or alumni who plan to attend a two-year trade or technical school.
Required Essays: Respond to BOTH Essays. 1) In a well developed paragraph, explain what has inspired you to enter into the tech field as your future career. AND 2) Mason was a true Mustang. He believed in “Tradition of Excellence” and giving back to South Western and his community. In a well developed paragraph, respond to the following question: In your time here at South Western, what have you done to deserve this scholarship which honors Mason’s legacy? Why should we choose you as a representative of his character?
The following scholarships are funded by the York County Community Foundation (YCCF). Dollar amounts are tentative. Final amounts will be determined by YCCF.
Doris Schwartz Foundation Scholarship
This scholarship is awarded to a resident of York county planning to attend a 4 or 2 year accredited school who demonstrates exceptional qualities of character, leadership, service, and academic achievement. Must demonstrate financial need. ~$4,000
Fred and Sylvia Marsh Endowment Fund Scholarship
This scholarship is awarded to a SWHS senior who is admitted and plans to attend an accredited college, university or technical/trade school as a full-time student. Applicants must have plans to pursue a career in the field of education ~ $1,000
Viola D Markle Scholarship
This scholarship is awarded to a SWHS senior who is admitted and plans to attend an accredited college, university or technical/trade school as a full-time student. Applicants must have plans to pursue a career in the field of education. ~$1,000
Emory H Markle Memorial Fund Scholarship
This scholarship is awarded to a SWHS senior who is admitted to and plans to attend an accredited college, university or technical/trade school as a full-time student. Applicants must have plans to pursue a career in the field of education. ~$1,000
Renner Medical/Mental Health Scholarship
This scholarship is awarded to a SWHS senior or alumni who will be a full time undergraduate or graduate student in 2023-2024. Applicants must be pursuing a career in the medical or mental health fields, including but not limited to nursing, medicine, psychology, clinical counseling, social work, psychiatry, allied health sciences. Accredited post-graduate and doctoral programs will also be considered. Multiple scholarships, ~ $2,000 each
Anna, Bennett and John Pearson Scholarship Fund
This scholarship is awarded to a SWHS senior who exhibits exceptional qualities of character and leadership, has financial need, a class rank in the top one third of the class, and will attend college, university or tech/trade school full-time. Students must be a resident of York County. ~ $1,000
Required Letter of Recommendation: Submit a letter describing applicant’s character and leadership qualities, community or other related activities, and personal/academic achievements.
Rosemary and Leon Tawney Scholarship
This scholarship is awarded to a SWHS senior pursuing a course of study in a medical related field who demonstrates financial need. ~$1,000
Dorothy Moore-Stauffer Scholarship
This scholarship is awarded to a SWHS senior who has financial need and plans to pursue post-secondary education at accredited colleges, universities, vocational or trade schools. Must reside in York County. ~$1,500
Robert R. Anderson Family Fund Scholarship
This scholarship is awarded to a York County student pursuing studies in agriculture, or improving farm productivity. Must demonstrate financial need. ~$1,500
Required Essay: Write a one page essay describing community activities, personal achievements, and career plans related to agriculture.
Florence B and Clyde W Stouch Fund
This scholarship is awarded to a York County student who is admitted and plans to attend University of Pennsylvania (Philadelphia, PA) and demonstrates good moral character and academic achievement, pursuing studies leading to a Bachelor of Arts or Science. Applicants must have financial need. ~$500
Marae V. Eyster Memorial Fund
This scholarship is awarded to a York County student who is admitted and plans to attend Millersville University pursuing studies for a career in education. Must demonstrate evidence of financial need. Six scholarships, ~$500 each
Herbert S and Louella B Dallmeyer Fund Scholarship
This scholarship is awarded to a student who is admitted and plans to attend an accredited college, university or technical/trade school as a full-time student, plans to pursue studies related to water resource conservation, environmental law or general environmental studies [preference will be given to students pursuing studies related to water resource conservation, if any] Student must be a resident of York County. ~$1,000
Required Essay: Write a one page essay describing your community activities, personal/academic achievements, and career plans pertaining to water conservation and/or the environment.
Randy Byrnes Girls Soccer Scholarship
This scholarship is awarded to a York County student who is a member of their high school’s girls soccer team. ~500
Required Essay: Write a one page essay describing soccer, community activities, personal academic achievements, and future plans.
Required Letter of Recommendation: Submit a letter of recommendation from your soccer coach.
Bob Potts Memorial Scholarship
This scholarship is awarded to a high school senior who resides in York County and participated on the school’s cross country team. Applicants should have an enthusiasm for distance running and be admitted to an accredited college, university or technical/trade school as a full-time student. ~$1,000
Required Letter of Recommendation: Submit a letter from your cross country coach.
Dollars for Scholars also has 3 scholarships with their own application process. Please look for instructions regarding these scholarships on the Scholarship Blog and emailed to seniors in the near future.
Troy Sanders Memorial Scholarship –2 scholarships, $1,000 each – High School Senior who is planning to attend college and whose life has been touched by the significant illness of a family member or friend.
Gladys Camp Memorial Scholarship – $1,000 – Applicant must be a senior anticipating graduation from South Western High School who is admitted to and plans to attend an accredited college or university as a full-time student. Preference will be given to those intending to pursue a career teaching special education, but consideration will be given to those committed to related service fields such as reading specialist, speech therapy/pathology, physical therapy, and/or occupational therapy.
Jay Wingert Memorial Key Club Scholarship – 2 scholarships, $5,000 and $2,500 – Awarded in memory of Jay Wingert who was an active South Western Key Club member from 1979-1981. Jay served as the Key Club president and actively participated in public service projects in both high school and as a student at Washington and Lee University. He was committed to lifelong selfless service for the betterment of humankind. The scholarship is awarded to a South Western Key Club member who exhibits the qualities of commitment to service and who intends to become a lifelong active service leader and community difference maker. Key Club seniors will receive information about this application directly from the Key Club advisors.
